Community update – June 2023
Gawara Baya
‘Wind Song’
In May, Windlab and the Gugu Badhun People celebrated the official naming of Gawara Baya, formerly Upper Burdekin Wind Farm. Gawara Baya means ‘Wind Song’ in the language of the Gugu Badhun Traditional Owners.
A small ceremony with representatives of the Gugu Badhun and members of the Mount Fox community was held on the project site to mark the occasion.
The official renaming was a key milestone under the Windlab-Gugu Badhun Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA). The ILUA was registered with Native Title in mid-2022, and is the culmination of more than three years’ collaboration with the Gugu Badhun People. Windlab and the Gugu Badhun people are now collaborating on a new logo for the project.
Supporting opportunities for local businesses
In May, Windlab hosted a series of workshops in Ingham, Charter Towers and Townsville for local businesses interested in tendering for works packages on the Gawara Baya project.
Windlab will be using the ICN Gateway portal to receive expressions of interest from suppliers.
If you missed the workshops and would like more information about the ICN Gateway process, please email gawarabaya@windlab.com.
